Musical slabs with motifs of four auspicious animals (dragon, phoenix, tiger and turtle circling by snake)
This kind of musical slab is one of the classic Chinese musical instruments. In terms of material, there are musical slabs made of stone, jade, clay and bronze. In terms of shape, there are obtuse angle shape, plow shape, stripe shape and fish shape. In terms of combination, there are single slab and multiple slabs. The artifacts belong to the seven pieces obtuse angle (135 degrees) shape, jade musical slabs set.
The dimension of the largest slab is as follows: The longer side of the angle is 14.2cm. The shorter side of the angle is 10.3cm. The side adjacent to the longer side is 4.3cm. The side adjacent to the shorter side is 5.6cm. The difference between the sides adjacent to the longer side for each other slab is 0.2cm. The difference between the sides adjacent to the shorter side for each other slab is 0.3cm. The thickness for every slab is 0.8cm.
As far as the motif is concern, the whole phoenix is carved adjacent to the longer side of the angle while only the head of the dragon is carved adjacent to the shorter side of the angle. The body of the dragon carved symmetrically on both sides of the slab with low relief technique. On the surfaces of the longer leg low relief tiger and turtle circling with snake are carved. Clouds and mountains withTaoist tradition are seen on the rest of the areas. All these conform the legenary motifs of Eastern Han Dynasty.
The workmanship of the carving is dexterous. They are vivid and beautiful especially when they are hanged on the wooden shelf. The wonderful classical Chinese musical instrument seems to be restored again to the modern world by these artifacts.
